The Canon 12x36 IS II Binoculars - A Great View by Jason Styles
When I first got a look through the Canon 12x36 IS binoculars I was not quite sure what to think and the IS feature would not live up to the hype and I would still need a tripod to get rid of the shaking that comes from using high powered binoculars. Well I was wrong and when I got the chance to actually use them, I was totally speechless.
Unlike traditional binoculars, the Canon 12x36 IS binoculars have image stability, which is what the IS stands for. Anyway typically you would see the shacking from your hands when holding the binoculars, and even though it was small, it was enough to make the image look distorted and unclear, and when you are using high magnification binoculars, you can see more of the shaking and less of what you are looking at clearly.
I am somewhat of an amateur astronomer and like to stare at the night sky through a telescope. After I used the Canon 12x36 IS binoculars, I may never go back to a telescope, well maybe I will but for right now these binoculars work just as good as a telescope. And even though you do not need a tripod, there is a place for you to mount one on the binoculars themselves, however you have the option to connect to a tripod if you would like to.
So, how do these binoculars work? I will not explane it in this article, but basically all you have to do is press the button on top of the binoculars and hold it down while you are viewing. This may make your finger tired after a half hour or so, however the crisp clear image is well worth it. Hopefully they will fix this feature in upcoming models so that you can just press the button once and the IS will stay on for a few minutes at least.
The Canon 12x36 IS binoculars get their image stabilizing power from 2 standard batteries. You can use rechargeable batteries and still get the same great performance, however, the batteries still only last about 20 hours or so. But that is 20 hours of full viewing time if you want to, you can use these binoculars like any regulare set of binoculars without using any battery power.
In conclusion overall I thought these binoculars were excellent The focus was very sharp and exact, and even with the image stability off you could still see for miles without distortion, but you may need a tripod. These binoculars are water resistant to so you can view with them when it is wet out however these binoculars are not water proof, but even with that drawback the Canon 12x36 IS II binoculars are definitely more than meets the eye.
